 With his sights set on becoming a doctor, Jonathan Lin of Pittsburgh, PA aims high and refuses to settle for less. His journey toward becoming a doctor began at two of his local hospitals, where he volunteered over 150 hours. While working in the Department of Radiation Oncology, Jonathan realized that he wanted to become a doctor so that he could help those who are sick or disabled. His passion for service did not end there, however. Jonathan also volunteered as a teaching assistant in a class that taught Chinese Chess. It was there that he "learned how to instruct others patiently."
No stranger to excellence, Jonathan continued to push himself beyond the call of service. With the desire to compete in the Cincinnati World Piano Competition, he attended weekly lessons in addition to engaging in many hours of private practice. One of his advisor’s, in awe of Jonathan’s commitment and dedication, wrote highly of his efforts, stating that “Jonathan is a very talented and hard worker, who has achieved excellence. Among other successes he has won twice the World Piano Competition and played at Carnegie Hall, New York.”
Since earning his Bronze Medal, Jonathan has gratefully reflected on his experience with the Congressional Award. “Now that I look back,” he said, “I realize that I helped out a lot of people. It was a really good experience.” |
I can think of no higher accolade than being a recipient of the Congressional Award Gold Medal. In fact, I think so highly of the way the Congressional Award helps to mold young people that I believe every person between the ages of 14 and 24 should strive to earn a medal. Almost 30,000 more young people are currently working toward the Congressional Award Gold Medal. As the Secretary to the Board of Directors and an advisor to some two hundred students, I am proud to work with such deeply invested and dedicated people. I have seen the changes in young adults brought about by committing to bettering themselves physically, intellectually, and in the eyes of their communities.

Opportunities are available for past Congressional Award Gold Medalists to apply for semester internship positions at the Congressional Award National Office in Washington, DC. The intern will work with Program Managers to promote the Congressional Award to Members of Congress, youth organizations, schools, Congressional Award Advisors and state/local media. He/she will assist in program operations and events throughout the semester. The intern must be an innovative thinker and team player.
