Steven C. Roberts is the classic American entrepreneur. He was born to middle class hard working parents, and educated in the St. Louis Public School System. He worked his way through college and law school to become one of the United States leading urban developers and businessman based in St. Louis, Missouri.
Throughout his rise in business, Mr. Roberts maintained a strong commitment to the African-American community from which he came. Locating his headquarters in the heart of the community where he has served as an elected official and was raised, his endeavors over the last thirty-five years have created thousands of jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities, raised the level of economic activity and enhanced the quality of life for the African-American community in several metropolitan areas throughout the United States.
His broad level of professional knowledge and experience developed as both business owner and public official (St. Louis Board of Alderman, 1979-1991) encompasses the application of innovative financing strategies, and successful management techniques for urban commercial properties. His leadership in the crating of innovative strategies for financing of redevelopment projects propelled the city into a major redevelopment phase that lasted throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s. He has often served as an advisor to other city council members in cities nationwide through his service on the Boards of Directors of Missouri Municipal League, The National League of Cities, and Officer/General Counsel of the National Black Caucus of Locally Elected Officials (NBC/LEO) National Policy Alliance.
In the decades that followed, Mr. Roberts used his extraordinary and creative leadership abilities to build a business empire that encompasses television and radio broadcasting, real estate development, communication towers and telephone company, hotel ownership and management.
Today he is one of America’s most successful business leaders, and is the recipient of numerous awards including the 2007 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year; and was further selected as a participant in some of America’s most prestigious programs including: The Army War College, 2001; and The Joint Civilian Orientation Conference (JCOC’73 to the Middle East, 2007).
Mr. Roberts is a Lifetime Member of the American Council of Young Political Leaders. As a member he served as delegate to Canada at the Atlantic Council meeting in the fall of 1979. He was host to the delegation of political leaders traveling to St. Louis from Argentina in 1985 and form Vietnam in the spring of 2007. Mr. Robert’s continued international travel includes trips to India (Spring 1985), USSR (Spring 1987) and Japan (fall 1991) and South Africa as a participant in the International Shopping Centers Conference (2007).
He has served on the Board of Directors of numerous publicly held companies, nonprofit, and philanthropic organizations. Mr. Roberts is a sought after speaker/panelist in the areas of entrepreneurship, urban redevelopment and leadership training; speaking at Cornell University Hotel School-Deans distinguished Speaker.
Steven C. Roberts received his graduate Juris Doctorate (1977) and Masters of Law/LLM specializing in Urban Development and Law (1978) from Washington University in St. Louis. He received his undergraduate Bachelor of Arts with honors from Clark University, double major in Economics and Sociology (1974). He studied and taught in West Africa during college.
