Michael Skahill is currently Vice President of Government Affairs for the Smithfield Foods, Inc. offices in Smithfield, Virginia and Washington, DC.
In this position, Skahill plays a key role in driving forward and supporting the work already underway in the development of policies and strategies to engage governments, multilateral organizations, and other key stakeholders in domestic and international markets that are strategic to Smithfield Foods.
Since joining Smithfield in 1998, Skahill has also served in key international sales functions and also most recently was a Vice President of International Sales.
Skahill serves on various industry leadership boards and committees. Skahill serves as the chairman of the American Romania Business Council, the vice chair of the American Poland Business Council, and treasurer of the US-China Agriculture and Food Partnership. He also serves the North American Meat Institute and the US Meat Industry China Leadership Team while representing Smithfield to the US China Business Council in Washington, DC. Skahill also currently serves the board of the U.S. Meat Export Federation, the National Pork Board’s Strategic Planning Task Force, Trade Committee and Resolutions Committee. In 2016, Former United States Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, appointed Skahill to director of the National Pork Board.
Prior to joining Smithfield in 1998, Skahill has thirteen years of international meat merchandising and trading experience with the Louis Dreyfus Corporation, the United States Meat Export Federation, and Cargill, Inc. From 1988 to 1990, Skahill worked and lived in Amsterdam, the Netherlands while representing Cargill’s worldwide meat trading business.
Skahill holds a degree from Iowa State University. Skahill is a native of Dubuque, Iowa and currently resides in Williamsburg, Virginia with his family.
